VEB Pentacon Dresden was an East German camera maker formed as VEB Kamera- und Kinowerke Dresden in 1959 by amalgation of VEB Kinowerke Dresden (former East German Zeiss Ikon) , Kamera Werke, Belca, Altissa, Welta, and cine film specialist Aspecta. In 1964 it was named Pentacon.

Welta Penti Type 0 is a tiny, all-mechanical half-frame camera with a unique film advance lever, a Meyer-Optic Trioplan 𝒇3.5-22 30mm (42mm full-frame equiv.) lens, and a simple 30-125 +B shutter and a flash port.

The prototype camera was showcased at an exclusive unveiling party, where actor and model Riko, a passionate film camera user, joined Ricoh executives Makoto Iikawa (manager at Pentax Division) and Takeo Suzuki (Product Planner and Designer) to discuss the allure of film cameras.. The Welta Penti II is a flamboyantly styled 35mm half-frame camera originally manufactured by Welta in the German town of Freital and, after the company became part of Pentacon, in their factory in the nearby city of Dresden.

In 1961 the Penti II was introduced by Pentacon 's predecessor VEB Kinowerke. This version made it a real classic, combining the uniquely designed full featured viewfinder camera with viewfinder-controlled coupled match-needle selenium meter. It was produced until 1977. The Penti I was similar to the II, but without the meter.

Pentis are 18 x 24mm, half frame, cameras on 35mm film. This implies that "portrait" mode is what you get with the camera in the horizontal position. There is a photo counter that needs to be manually reset when loading the film. Penti's particular is the advance mode. As well as her normal accessories of a necklace, earrings and ring, the Penti II was shown as an essential addition to give that finishing touch to her lifestyle.
